I have posted a ridiculous amount of photos on my facebook page, so this is a short run down of Nana's time here in NC... we mainly hung out and relaxed for the first couple of days. The kids instantly took to mom and knew who she was and it's a good thing since mom watched the twinkies while Carl, myself and Alan all had to work multiple days. The first weekend she was here though we took off to Wilmington, NC and was able to walk downtown Wilmington and see the sights. It is a beautiful place and is wear Michael Jordan spent his childhood! In downtown Wilmington there is a Serpentarium (http://www.capefearserpentarium.com/) and we stopped and visited it... it was quite... interesting. The twinkies loved it, Alan loved it and well mom and I were fascinated by most of it as well. In the entry there were parrots and they were entertaining and colorful and just beautiful!
Then not so beautiful were the crocodiles and snakes... this one below was close to 12 feet and of course the kids were just excited that it was a "cocdile," see... we watch Swamp People on TV and it's about men and women that hunt crocodiles and sell them to survive and so the kids know what they are and think they are pretty great... I still think they are pretty scary! But they definitely enjoyed seeing the reptiles.
We wanted to show mom what North Carolina was all about so we took her to dinner at a place called Carolina Ale House and well, it's delicious! Here are the girls all in pink enjoying the yummy food! I had a guacamole burger and let me tell you what it was one of the best burgers I think I have ever had! We have been there a few times, but I think that will be my new "regular"
The following day we went to the beach and we went for the whole morning! The kids loved the beach, the day was perfect, the sand was soft, Alan fell asleep and got burnt to a crisp and I peeled in a small section on my back for the first time in my life, and well I think mom had a pretty great time too.
Seriously there is not much more peaceful or beautiful than the ocean...
Mom was able to join us for Father's Day and we made it the best we could for daddy... he had to work pretty much the whole day, but when he got home we made sure we had food to BBQ... we did pepper and onion skewers as well as chipotle steak, citrus chicken, and garlic shrimp skewers, and let me tell you what, they were good!
We blew bubbles by the bottle and mom showed the kids that you can use paper rolls to blow bubbles, it was fun and again it was a perfect day out!
Finally we went to Raleigh the day before mom had to leave, the picture below was at the Southpoint Mall and a beautiful mall it was!
We got to meet up with my college roommate Brittney and well I just love her to pieces. She brings a smile to my face every time I see her. She is so beautiful inside and out and I need to make more of a point to see her more often!
While mom was here we discussed planting a salsa garden on our front porch, so after saying goodbye, which was awfully hard, I stopped and got the material, came home and planted tomatoes, peppers, and intend on finishing it off with a small bushel of cilantro and some onions before the week is up.... below is the start of that front porch salsa garden. My mom always was great at growing plants and coming up with creative ideas and I'm so lucky she took her first couple weeks in summer to come see us. We love you mom! Thanks for all you did while being here and all you continue to do when you are not here. We hope we get to see you again soon!
Finally, to keep my mind occupied my girlfriend Jess and her 8 month old Xan stopped by. They are moving away from NC thanks to the Army and we had to see each other one more time. I hate goodbye's and I said it twice in one day... what was I thinking!? Love you Jess, have a safe move and keep in touch!!
